Seach Engine How To Guide
Search engine optimization and positioning is unique and a full time consideration
when it comes to getting your site to the top and keeping it there. Included in the
guide below is some advice we have gathered through the years and some key points
you need to take into account when promoting your website.
Key considerations should include the page ranking system which covers mainly incoming links from high ranking websites.
Also consider your out going links and the type of sites they are pointing to, including quantity and quality of links.
The main consideration with search engines is promotion for starters, the search engines need to find you. The best way to achieve this is by registering with them and or getting inbound links to your site. Inbound links are the most critical aspects of getting a good position with your site for your selected keywords.
Keywords Did you know when you name your site and get your url that this is the strongest keyword you will own? For example if you get the URL “www.mydomain.com.au” then your keywords would be “my domain”, so it is very important that you consider this first when buying a domain name. The other keywords that you use through out your site will eventually get results, but never as high as your url name.
It is therefore the most important thing you do when starting a site, considering your URL. Second to this is your opening speech or first paragraph. This is the immediate text that the search engine spiders will use to check the relevance of your site and how it will appear in a search. When wording your first paragraph you should include and repeat the keywords as much as possible to gain maximum exposure.
Page Rank
Page rank is part of Googles main formula and that which determines how you will rank against your competitors. The higher the page rank you have the higher your keywords will appear on Google. Google is the primary search engine and feeds the other smaller search engines with its extensive libraries and data, so this should be your primary concern.
To see what your page rank is you will need to download Google toolbar, from there you will need to ensure that the extended features are activated to make the page ranking graph work. Once you have it loaded you can then navigate to any page on the internet and you will see that the Page Rank graph springs to life and gauges the page. It is important to remember here that page rank is page specific not site specific, and its possible to have a site where the front page is high ranking and the other pages are not.
The norm for the page ranking scheme is any where from 0-4, anything above this you are doing very well indeed and do not need to read this!
To increase your page ranking there are really only two things possible. Firstly:
High Ranking Incoming Links The only incoming links you should be looking for are links from sites that rank higher that you, for example getting links from sites that rank the same or lower will not increase you page rank, however higher ranking sites linking to you will have a definite impact on your sites ranking. This does depend on the amount of other links the site linking to you has on the same page. For example a site linking to you with 10 other links on the page linking to other sites is not going to have a good as effect as one with only 3 other site links on the same page. This is part of the formula that Google has worked into the page ranking system.
Site relevance and link name also plays an important role here and when using textural links ensure you use the right keywords on the link from the site linking to you. Longevity
It has also been proven that just by having a website for any long term period will bring up your ranking and relevance on Google. This is not a bullet proof method but given that you will more than likely use the other techniques as well, you can expect that time will always be on your side.
In Closing... What should you do? • Get as many incoming high ranking links as possible. • Get your site out there, promote it, the more hits the better the ranking.
• Get you site registered in all the search engines and consider pay per click campaigns.
• Post your site on message boards, blogs and anywhere else you can.
• And finally, work at it. It will pay off.
